Stand for a Healthy Office.

Posted on: June 27, 2016

More and more individuals are expressing the need to stand throughout the work day.  The benefits of doing so can no longer be ignored.  Companies are therefore faced with the challenge of providing an environment that their employees feel healthier working in.  Converting existing furniture has become a cost effective solution to meet the demands of employees while also saving the expense and hassle of purchasing new furniture.  With ISE height adjustable bases almost any fixed work surface can easily transform into a sit to stand surface.

Why Sit-to-Stand Desks

-Reduced risk of Obesity-

James Levine, an endocrinologist at the Mayo Clinic, has done a recent investigation into why some people gain weight over time and others do not. He and his team recruited a group of office workers who were all put on the exact same diet that contained about 1000 calories more then their normal diets and told them to not change any of their exercise habits. They found that in spite of making all things equal, some still gained weight while others still lost weight or stayed the same. After more investigation into the topic, it was discovered that those who were not gaining weight were up and walking about 2.25 hours more then those who were gaining weight, even though all of them worked at sitting desks and none of them were going to the gym.

Scientists have also found that the reduced amount of calories burned throughout a typical work day is directly associated with sitting throughout the day. This is explained because of metabolic changes at play, such as the body’s cells becoming less responsive to insulin, or sedentary muscles releasing lower levels of the enzyme lipoprotein lipase.

The first step is getting up, and having a desk that encouraged you to stand rather then sitting can play a huge role in getting you and your office moving in the right direction.

Reduced risk of Type 2 Diabetes-

Studies have also indicated that there is a correlation between extended periods of sitting and a reduced effectiveness of your body in regulating levels of glucose in the bloodstream which is directly related to the cause of a condition called metabolic syndrome which dramatically increases a persons chances of type 2 diabetes.

Simply choosing to stand throughout the majority of your work day rather then sitting can help reduce your chances of developing any of these conditions and may even lead to more regular movement throughout your day.

Reduced risk of Cardiovascular Disease

Since, scientists have found that adults who spend two more hours per day sitting have a 125 percent increased risk of health problems related to cardiovascular disease, including chest pain and heart attacks. Other work has found that men who spend more than five hours per day sitting outside of work and get limited exercise were at twice the risk of heart failure as those who exercise often and sit fewer than two hours daily outside of the office. Even when the researchers controlled for the amount of exercise, excessive sitters were still 34 percent more likely to develop heart failure than those who were standing or moving.
